PES, DST and JEF: choosing a machine embroidery file format

Match your exact machine model, the format available at your chosen size and the export's dimensions before buying an embroidery design.

Choose a machine embroidery file format by checking your exact machine model, then finding that extension at the size or design part you need. A pack containing PES, DST or JEF files does not establish compatibility with every machine from a brand. File format, design dimensions and machine limits need separate checks.

Use the model manual first

Find the accepted embroidery data, maximum embroidery area and transfer instructions in your machine's manual. Also check any limits on stitches, colours or filenames. Software may open formats that your machine cannot read, so a successful software preview is only one step.

For a specific example, Brother lists PES, PHC and DST for the PE550D. Janome explains JEF stitch data separately from editable JAN and EMB master files. These are useful reference points, not a substitute for checking your model.

Check formats at the size you want

The Norea Designs catalogue currently contains 41 packs. Across the catalogue, the extensions include DST, PES, JEF, EXP, HUS, VP3, XXX, VIP, SEW and TAP. This is a catalogue-wide list: it does not mean that every pack contains ten formats or that every size has the same files.

Read the selected size's formats and the product's format matrix. In Levi — Ackerman, NOR-016, JEF is included for some sizes but not for the 6″ and 10″ labels. A general JEF tag would not answer your question if you needed one of those sizes specifically.

Keep colour information and companion files together

A machine's colours can differ from the design preview. In its PE550D documentation, Brother explains that DST data does not carry specific thread colour information. Check the intended sequence before stitching instead of treating the machine's default palette as the intended colours.

Some exports have companion files. The BERNINA 540 manual explains the EXP stitch file, BMP preview and INF colour information. Preserve associated files when they are included, following your model's instructions. They are not additional embroidery designs.

A renamed extension is not a conversion

Renaming a DST file to PES does not change its data. If your required format is missing at the size you need, ask before buying. Any conversion needs checking in appropriate software and on the machine; identical dimensions, colours and stitch results cannot simply be assumed.

Split formats may contain multiple files for one size label. Read their details before starting rather than selecting whichever file appears first. On affected product pages, VIP dimensions that could not be read in the audit remain explicitly unverified. An included extension is not proof of a measured size.

Four checks before you choose

  • Exact machine model, supported formats and limits.
  • Required format included at your selected size or part.
  • That export's dimensions within the usable hoop area.
  • Product notes on parts, rotation, colours and companion files.

Use the formats and dimensions overview and the product catalogue. For a specific question, contact support with the design reference, model and required format.
